Akron Children's Hospital has come out on top in the competition to buy the former Notre Dame College campus in South Euclid.
Akron Children's confirmed in an email statement that it was the successful bidder at a private auction this week.
"We believe the campus is a great location for future pediatric specialty services in a vibrant, thriving community," the hospital said in the statement. "Our goal is to improve access to high quality care in Greater Cleveland with a 100% focus on kids.鈥
The city of South Euclid was the second highest bidder for the property and said in a statement that it was designated the back-up bidder, should the sale with Akron Children's not move forward.
The city congratulated Akron Children's on it winning bid and added that it appreciated that it was "part of its plans to increase access to care for children in our community."
Mayor Georgine Welo added that "the city's involvement was always about protecting the long-term interest of South Euclid and ensuring the community had a seat at the table."
Akron Children's did not share the amount of its winning bid for the 48-acre property.
According to Cleveland.com, Akron Children's outbid a $7.9 million offer from South Euclid and a $7.5 million joint offer from a private developer and a Cleveland Heights yeshiva school.
Notre Dame College closed in 2024 after years of declining enrollment and financial struggles. A federal judge appointed a receiver in October 2025 to take control of the assets of the college, clearing a big hurdle in the sale of the campus. Bank of America, the college's creditor, had previously sought the move, alleging the school had defaulted on roughly $20 million it owed.
The sale, which still requires approval from a federal judge later this month, is expected to close by the end of June.
