AI Guiding Principles
These guiding principles will be reviewed and updated as warranted. They serve the organization as a whole; the Content Department follows further AI guidance outlined in ¾«¶«Ó°Òµâ€™s Editorial Ethics and Guidelines.
- Human Oversight: All use of AI will be under the direction, supervision, and editorial control of staff. Staff have final responsibility for all products and services. AI use will focus on enhancing human decision-making, creativity, and productivity.
- Transparency: ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ, like many organizations, is exploring appropriate AI use to enhance our ability to serve the community. Maintaining the trust of our audience is paramount; we will disclose when and how AI is used to significantly assist with journalistic projects.
- Accuracy: We will not assume AI answers are correct – we will always factcheck AI research to ensure accuracy.
- Editorial Integrity: We will approach AI use with thoughtfulness and integrity. The use of AI in the newsroom will be guided by our Editorial Ethics and Guidelines. AI use can enhance clarity during the production process but never be used to alter reality.
- Compliance: AI use must comply with all applicable laws, including copyright and intellectual property rights.
- Data Security and Privacy: We will safeguard sensitive data by only using GAI (Generative Artificial Intelligence) tools that are centrally managed by ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ. The privacy of our audience, donors, and staff will be protected in all AI applications. When working with non-sensitive data, staff will exercise common sense and seek guidance as needed.
- Test and Share: We will iterate to find the most effective prompts, and experiment to get better results. We will share what’s working and what’s not, and help the organization refine AI practices to better support our mission and values.
- Authenticity: We will value authenticity in written communication, exercising caution when using AI to assist with writing so that individual voice and tone are not lost.
