There are many great bookstores in Northeast Ohio that are more than bookstores - they're a gathering place. Maybe there's a cafe inside, or an area where you can see and hear from your favorite authors.
Well Visible Voice Books just moved from Tremont to Ohio City into a space that offers all those things, along with a very cool history.
The building used to be the Lorain Theater, which opened in the 1920s and showed all those great horror flicks in the '30s and '40s. It had a Wurlitzer organ that overheated after a show one night and caught fire, causing $2,500 in damage.
In 1970, it became the Denmark Cinema which showed ... we'll just say 'art films.'
But don't confuse this with the Lorain-Fulton Theater that was just down the street. That one also opened in the '20s and had lettering on its marquee that was a classic example of Art Deco style.
