Independent Bookstore Day
The “Great Twenty-Eight" isn’t just Chuck Berry’s greatest hits album: It’s a nod to the 28 Northeast Ohio bookstores participating in a starting on Saturday, Independent Bookstore Day. Grab a physical or digital copy of the official passport and head to shops in Cuyahoga, Summit, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina and Portage counties. Visit 14 or more by June 30, and you could win some prizes.
In Coventry Village in Cleveland Heights, the literature-centric weekend actually starts on Friday at 4 p.m., when the Heights Theater hosts a panel discussion about . At 7 p.m., the theater hosts a reading by winners.
From books to the Earth
In honor of Earth Day earlier this week hosts a free celebration from 2-5 p.m. in North Hill. The nonprofit offers more than 130 community garden plots on land that was once city baseball fields but has been transformed into greenspace. On Saturday, visitors can help build mini planters, learn about composting and vermicomposting and enjoy guided tours of the farm.
100 years of Maple
For the past century, Geauga County’s has brought people together for a taste of this season’s maple stirs. This year's fest runs through Sunday and includes arts and crafts, a lumberjack competition, parades and, of course, a pancake eating contest. The weekend culminates in Tappin’ Sunday, a ceremonial tapping of the maple tree on Chardon Square.
Chorale for the mind
present a program Sunday uniting singers from 22 communities in Northeast Ohio. Unclouded Day: Raising Our Voices for Mental Health starts at 4 p.m. at the Hudson High School auditorium. The concert includes a performance of Shawn Kirchner’s reimagining of the gospel song "Unclouded Day" plus a mix of traditional, spiritual and contemporary choral works. Artistic Director Jon C. Peterson described the event as a way to "foster understanding, spark conversation and remind our community that none of us walks alone."
Got to be there
Michael Jackson's first film foray was singing the theme to a movie about killer rodents ("Ben"). His latest, the posthumous biopic "Michael," is in theaters now. Whichever one you prefer, you can still check out at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Visitors can see artifacts from the two-time inductee, including his iconic red jacket and sequined glove. Stay for the trivia contest or to create a Michael Jackson button while supplies last.
