Cuyahoga County Council is considering a 鈥減ay to stay鈥 ordinance, which would give the county鈥檚 hundreds of thousands of renters a legal defense to stay in their homes if they pay all owed rent and late fees before an eviction hearing.

Under the ordinance, tenants can defend themselves against eviction proceedings in housing court by showing that they offered to pay back rent, reasonable late fees and court costs, but that the landlord refused to accept payment.
