Know Ohio: The Man Behind the Trophy

John Heisman, born in 1869 in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood, grew up to become one of football’s earliest innovators.

After playing at Brown and the University of Pennsylvania, he made his greatest impact as a coach, bringing new ideas and strategy to teams from Oberlin to Georgia Tech.

Heisman helped pioneer major elements of the modern game, including the forward pass and the snap.

His Georgia Tech team’s 222–0 victory over Cumberland in 1916 remains the most lopsided win in college football history!

After his death in 1936, his legacy endured through the Heisman Trophy, awarded annually to the nation’s top college football player and reflecting his commitment to excellence and innovation.
