What It Was: The Mathews Hotel in Akron

Season 28 | 1m 18s

Opened in 1925, it was one of the only hotels in the Rubber City that catered to Black travelers. By the late '70s as the city fell on hard times, the hotel closed and was later demolished to make way for the Innerbelt. The legacy of its founder, George Washington Mathews, lives on through a monument designed by Akron artist Miller Horns in 2012.
