People are turning to chatbots for emotional support
The use of generative artificial intelligence chatbots to support mental and emotional health is growing in popularity. Some estimates put the number of adults using such tools at 1 in 3.
The chatbots and wellness apps are also popular with younger users, including teenagers. In some instances, people, including teens have relied so heavily on these tech tools that they are viewed as 'friends' or even 'romantic partners.'
But experts caution that while such AI-driven technologies can be useful, they are also limited and cannot be substituted for actual intervention by a trained, human practitioner, especially for those in mental health crisis.
