Cheryl Thompson has been an investigative journalist for decades. She's worked for publications like The Washington Post and her reporting can be heard on National Public Radio. Her newest endeavor combines her journalistic skills with a personal connection.
The book "Forgotten Souls" looks at the lives of 27 Tuskegee Airmen who never returned home and whose remains were never found.
While Thompson's father was not a pilot, he did train at Tuskegee Airfield and worked alongside the famed fighter pilots.
The book not only profiles the men who were lost in combat, but tells of their experiences serving in the segregated armed forces and the racism they experienced in civilian life.
Thompson spoke to the "Sound of Ideas" about the book and how she bonded with some of the Tuskegee Airmen, whom she interviewed for the book.
