Akron releases plans for transformation of defunct Innerbelt

Akron Innerbelt Reimagined
Start: 00:00

The city of Akron built a highway in the 1970s that cut through largely Black neighborhoods, displacing hundreds of households and demolishing dozens of businesses. Several miles of the roadway were decommissioned in 2016 and have sat vacant since then.

Now, the city wants to reconnect the neighborhoods that were cut off from Downtown by that highway, and right what they see as a historic wrong.

Along with a developer, they've assembled a master plan that reimagines more than 50 acres of space, including that empty highway. The master plan calls for housing and green space to be built, as well as investment in commercial corridors close to Downtown.

Monday on the "Sound of Ideas" we'll learn more about the plans for the Innerbelt from Akron Mayor Shammas Malik.

Guests:
- Shammas Malik, Mayor, City of Akron

Garden Season Kicks Off
Start: 22:07

For Northeast Ohio gardeners, the planting season often begins after the last frost, which in Cleveland is expected around April 14, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. And cool-weather crops like asparagus, cabbage, kale, spinach and radishes are already in season, based on the Ohio Farm Bureau.

As more people dig into gardening, many are also looking at ways to make their yards more sustainable. Native plants, which are adapted to local conditions, typically require less water and maintenance, while also supporting pollinators, birds and other wildlife.

We鈥檒l talk to some area green thumbs about how to best care for your garden this year.

Guests:
- Kim Lessman, Manager, Holden Forests & Gardens Seed Bank
- Dave Tomashefski, Co-owner, Meadow City Native Plant Nursery
- Catherine Freay, Master Gardener, Ohio State University Extension Medina County
