Severe weather awareness and preparedness tips
You may have heard of "stop, drop and roll." But what about "drop, cover and hold on?"
April through July marks severe weather season in Ohio, and it's the time of year when conditions are most favorable for strong storms and tornadoes.
It's only the fourth month and already 10 tornadoes have been recorded statewide. Both Geauga and Wayne counties were hit earlier this month. In a typical year, Ohio sees between 20 and 25 tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service.
But it's not just severe weather events drawing attention. Lake County experienced its fourth earthquake of the year earlier this month 鈥 a magnitude 2.1 event detected about a mile and a half southeast of Madison Village. The Madison area is known for seismic activity, with the largest earthquake on record there measuring a magnitude 4.8 in the 1980s.
Last Wednesday, hundreds of cars and houses in Solon and Bedford, Ohio were damaged by a golf-ball sized hailstorm.
Monday on the "Sound of Ideas," we'll discuss what all of this means, and what folks can do to prepare for future severe weather events.

Students, families protest cuts to CMSD staff
Earlier this month, the Cleveland Metropolitan School District announced that it was cutting more about 400 full-time employees. The cuts are made up of 150 teachers, with the others being administrators, paraprofessionals and nurses.
Along with the staffing cuts - the district will close 29 buildings 鈥 hoping to save CMSD around $150 million over the next three years. Last Tuesday, the Board approved some of those cuts amid protests inside and outside of the board room.
We'll spend the rest of the hour discussing this evolving story with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District's CEO, Dr. Warren Morgan.
