Lake Erie is ideal 'rest stop' for birds during spring migration

Peak Bird Migration is Coming to Northeast Ohio
An estimated 96 million people across the country engage in birdwatching, a hobby that has grown increasingly popular over the years.

According to the National Audubon Society, bird watching has been shown to have a positive impact on people's mood and mental wellbeing.

Starting next week in Northeast Ohio, you will likely be noticing more birds in our area, because Lake Erie is known to be one of the best "rest stops" for migrating birds, as they travel north to their spring and summer habitats, after spending the winter in Central and Latin America.

But migrating birds are facing some population decline due to climate change, habitat loss and other factors.

On Tuesday's "Sound of Ideas," as we continue our Earth Week series, we'll talk about bird migration, and how we can be better stewards of the environment these creatures depend on.

The "Sound of Ideas" is partnering with Cleveland State University student journalists this semester. This segment about bird migration was produced in collaboration with students from the "Advanced Reporting" class at Cleveland State University.

Guests:
- Jen Brumfield, Natural Resources Coordinator, Cleveland Metroparks
- Gabe Leidy, Nature Photographer
