Importance of Wetlands
Wetlands are ecologically unique and diverse environments that are sometimes referred to as "Earth's kidney's" because of the function they serve, which includes filtering pollutants out of the water that flows through them.
Northern Ohio has numerous important wetlands, stretching from around the Maumee River in the Northwest portion of the state, to areas around the Cuyahoga River in our National Park, to the coastal wetlands that butt up against Lake Erie.
The statewide H2Ohio program has allocated funding to study and protect Ohio's wetlands, and locally, the Ohio Lake Erie Commission announced that Mentor Marsh is worthy of $750,000 for further restoration efforts.
We'll spend the rest of the hour talking about Northeast Ohio's wetlands with experts.
