Writer Sam Bloch was writing an article about bus stops in Los Angeles for a nature magazine, which eventually led to his new book "Shade."
Bloch's book looks at how heat and sunlight, civil engineering and climate change all intersect all in the name of staying cool. It's a book that argues that while heat related illnesses and deaths aren't as attention grabbing as a tornado or hurricane, they should be paid attention to more.
"Shade" also examines how our society has changed since the advent of air conditioning. And how creating more tree-lined streets can help address societal inequalities.
